In memory of Prof. Dr. h.c. Hans Sautter, Emeritus Professor of Ophthalmol- ogy in Hamburg, deceased on September 7th, 1984 at the age of 73
Hans Sautter, member of the Jules Gonin Club since 1968, was born in 1912 at Ebingen, Wfirttemberg. He studied medicine in Hamburg and Mfinchen and started as assistant in 1936 at the Eye Clinic of Tfibingen directed by Prof. Dr. W. Stock. He became Privat-Dozent in 1940, Senior Registrar in 1945 and Professor in 1947. In 1953, he was nominated Ordinary Professor of Ophthalmology in Hamburg succeeding Prof. Marchesani who died relatively young. He was Director of the Eye Clinic for 27 years, until the end of 1980. His activity was particularly dedicated to research in histopathology, blood circulation problems of the retina and microsurgery. He was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1959 to 1960 and President of the German Ophthalmology Society from 1965 to 1967. He was also member of the Leopoldina Society (Natural Science and Medicine). He has always taken an active part in the Jules Gonin meetings. Since his retirement he was living in Savognin, a place he particularly cherished in the Grisons, Switzerland. His sudden death due to a tragic accident in Savognin, has affected us deeply, and he will be sadly missed by all the other members of our Society.
