Riggs is the 2017 recipient of the TMS/SME/AIME James Douglas Gold Medal, conferred by TMS, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME), and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). The Douglas Medal honors distinguished achievement in nonferrous metallurgy. Riggs was honored for his innovations in the development of continue to improve operations performance.
