A Double-Blinded Randomized Clinical Study on the Therapeutic Effect of Gastrografin in Prolonged Postoperative Ileus After Elective Colorectal Surgery: Reply Sebastiano Biondo 0 Jordi Miquel 0 0 Department of General and Digestive Surgery, Colorectal Unit, Bellvitge University Hospital, University of Barcelona and IDIBELL , C/Feixa Llarga s/n, L'Hospitalet de Llobregatand, 08907 Barcelona , Spain - Dear Sir, We thank Dr Maripi for the interest and comments on our manuscript [ 1 ]. We agree that it is an understudied topic and we also believe that it is an interesting field that needs further research. The value of metoclopramide, similarly to other drugs with prokinetic effects, has not been proved for the solution of postoperative prolonged ileus (PPI). Metoclopramide is useful to improve symptoms such as nausea and vomiting without no proven effect on the course of the ileum. To our knowledge, interaction with Gastrografin has not been studied or mentioned. The interaction, would it exist, could be in any direction helping or hindering the possible effect of Gastrografin. In any case, the potential bias in our trial was taken in consideration, but not knowing whether it exists or not it was not possible to control it. Not using metoclopramide was not considered because it is of important clinical use to relieve symptoms. In any case, we judged that the potential bias was minimized by the fact that the same protocol was applied to all the patients in both groups. 1.
