Health related quality of life among myocardial infarction survivors in the United States: a propensity score matched analysis

Little is known regarding the health-related quality of life among myocardial infarction (MI) survivors in the United States. The purpose of this population-based study was to identify differences in health-related quality of life domains between MI survivors and propensity score matched controls. This retrospective, cross-sectional matched case-control study examined differences ...

Systemic Depreciation: An Analysis of Non-White Neighborhood Vulnerability to Urban Gentrification

This paper utilizes Smith's (1979) Rent Gap Theory, Feagin's (2006) Theory of Systemic Racism, and Smith’s (2010) Generative Planning Theory to argue that non-white neighborhoods in Denver, Colorado are more likely to suffer from capital depreciation and thus, are more vulnerable to urban gentrification and displacement. While critically analyzing racially motivated zoning ...

Stochastic regime switching SIS epidemic model with vaccination driven by Lévy noise

We formulate a stochastic SIS epidemic model with vaccination by introducing a Lévy noise and regime switching into the epidemic model. First, we prove that the stochastic model admits a unique global positive solution. Moreover, we study the asymptotic behavior of the stochastic regime switching SIS model with vaccination driven by Lévy noise.

A model for foreign exchange markets based on glassy Brownian systems

In this work we extend a well-known model from arrested physical systems, and employ it in order to efficiently depict different currency pairs of foreign exchange market price fluctuation distributions. We consider the exchange rate price in the time range between 2010 and 2016 at yearly time intervals and resolved at one minute frequency. We then fit the experimental datasets ...

Association of serum ferritin with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a meta-analysis

A growing number of studies reported the connection between the level of serum ferritin (SFL) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, such connection was still disputable. The aim of our meta-analysis was to estimate SFL between the groups as below: patients with NAFLD against control group; non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) patients against control group; ...

Pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis of the elderly: Characteristics and outcomes

Background The incidence of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis (PVO) has increased over the past two decades. One possible cause of this increase is the aging of the population, which results in more comorbidities in high income countries. Objective To better characterize the clinical presentation and outcome of PVO in the elderly. Design We conducted a post-hoc analysis of a ...

Zingerone alleviates the delayed ventricular repolarization and AV conduction in diabetes: Effect on cardiac fibrosis and inflammation

Background The study aims to analyse the action of zingerone in diabetes-related cardiac arrhythmias. Methods Diabetes was induced by streptozocin while treatment groups received 20 mg/kg zingerone daily. Following extra seven weeks, electrocardiography, extraction of blood, urine and heart for biochemical analysis, histopathology and immunofluorescence were undertaken. Results The ...

'Parallel Universe

Of the three kinds of two-mean comparisons which judge a test statistic against a critical value taken from a Student t-distribution, one – the repeated measures or dependent-means application – is distinctive because it is meant to assess the value of a parameter which is not part of the natural order. This absence forces a choice between two interpretations of a significant test ...

Multi-objective energy management system for DC microgrids based on the maximum membership degree principle

With the increasing quantity of DC electrical equipment, DC microgrids have been paid more and more attention. This paper proposes an approach to multi-objective optimisation of an energy management system (EMS) for a DC microgrid that includes a hybrid energy storage system (HESS). The operating and maintenance cost and the loss of power supply probability (LPSP) of the system are ...

Analysis method for PCBs in reclaimed oil using a fast-GC triple stage quadrupole mass spectrometer with the 13-component quantitation method

It is necessary for companies supplying reclaimed oil to analyze polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), because there is a possibility of the presence of contaminants due to trace-level PCBs in the reclaimed oil. However, common analysis methods of PCBs are time-consuming and complicated. Fast-GC triple stage quadrupole mass spectrometer with the 13-component quantitation method is an ...

Markers of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition reflect tumor biology according to patient age and Gleason score in prostate cancer

Introduction Prostate carcinoma (PRAD) is one of the most frequently diagnosed malignancies amongst men worldwide. It is well-known that androgen receptor (AR) plays a pivotal role in a vast majority of prostate tumors. However, recent evidence emerged stating that estrogen receptors (ERs) may also contribute to prostate tumor development. Moreover, progression and aggressiveness ...

Multi-modality imaging evaluation of recurrent Tako-tsubo syndrome in a patient with coronary artery fibromuscular dysplasia

Integrated bedside and sophisticated cardiac imaging techniques help characterize the discrepancy between myocardial injury and mechanic dysfunction in acute myocardial infarction. A 57 year-old woman presented with sudden onset chest pain and ventricular fibrillation after hearing of her brother’s death. The electrocardiography indicated “anterior wall ST segment elevation ...

Living with conduct problem youth: family functioning and parental perceptions of their child

Parenting children with conduct problems (CP) is challenging, yet very little is known about the impact of the child’s behaviour on family functioning or how parents of children with CP perceive their child. The aim of this research was to examine whether families with children with CP and high vs. low levels of callous–unemotional traits (HCU vs. LCU) experience differences in ...

The (other) butterfly effect

Aside from the occasional butterflies that soar around campus, the only insects most students come in contact with are ants crawling on buildings and cockroaches in the dormitories. Though these miniscule creatures have most of us running in the other direction, insects are actually vital to our survival on Earth.

The BRAIN test: a keyboard-tapping test to assess disability and clinical features of multiple sclerosis

Background The BRadykinesia Akinesia INcordination (BRAIN) test is an online keyboard-tapping test previously validated as a sensitive tool for detecting signs of Parkinson’s disease. Objectives To determine whether the BRAIN test can measure disability in MS and identify the presence of pyramidal or cerebellar dysfunction. Methods Kinesia scores (KS, number of key taps in 30 s), ...
