Pathways and Patterns of Cell Loss in Verified Alzheimer’s Disease: A Factor and Cluster Analysis of Clinico-Pathological Subgroups

Thirty-seven patients with neuropathologically verified Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been studied prospectively. A principal components analysis of neuron numbers in cortical and subcortical areas revealed two variables: Variable I with high loadings for the hippocampo-parahippocampo-parietal neuron counts and Variable II with high loadings for coeruleo-frontal cell numbers...

Comparative Genomics of a Bacterivorous Green Alga Reveals Evolutionary Causalities and Consequences of Phago-Mixotrophic Mode of Nutrition

Cymbomonas tetramitiformis—a marine prasinophyte—is one of only a few green algae that still retain an ancestral particulate-feeding mechanism while harvesting energy through photosynthesis. The genome of the alga is estimated to be 850 Mb–1.2 Gb in size—the bulk of which is filled with repetitive sequences—and is annotated with 37,366 protein-coding gene models. A number of...

Molecular jet emission and a spectroscopic survey of S235AB

Context. The S235AB star forming region houses a massive young stellar object which has recently been reported to exhibit possible evidence of jet rotation – an illusive yet crucial component of disk aided star formation theories.Aims. We confirm the presence of a molecular counterpart to the jet and we also study the molecular environment in S235AB.Methods. We search for...

Working Together to Foster Candidate Success on the edTPA

This action research study examined the effectiveness of one model for supporting candidates in their work in preparing and submitting their edTPA portfolios. Surveys of student teachers and their cooperating teachers were administered and analyzed to determine how the model impacted their experiences with the edTPA. This data can inform implementation efforts at other campuses.

A ‘water spout’ maser jet in S235AB-MIR

We report on annual parallax and proper motion observations of H2O masers in S235AB-MIR, which is a massive young stellar object in the Perseus Arm. Using multi-epoch VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) astrometry we measured a parallax of π = 0.63 ± 0.03 mas, corresponding to a trigonometric distance of $D= 1.56^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$ kpc, and source proper motion of (μαcos...

Validation of a Microsphere Immunoassay for Serological Leptospirosis Diagnosis in Human Serum by Comparison to the Current Gold Standard

A microsphere immunoassay (MIA) utilising Luminex xMap technology that is capable of determining leptospirosis IgG and IgM independently was developed. The MIA was validated using 200 human samples submitted for routine leptospirosis serology testing. The traditional microscopic agglutination (MAT) method (now 100 years old) suffers from a significant range of technical problems...

Mercury in the Soil of Two Contrasting Watersheds in the Eastern United States

Soil represents the largest store of mercury (Hg) in terrestrial ecosystems, and further study of the factors associated with soil Hg storage is needed to address concerns about the magnitude and persistence of global environmental Hg bioaccumulation. To address this need, we compared total Hg and methyl Hg concentrations and stores in the soil of different landscapes in two...

Xenbase, the Xenopus model organism database; new virtualized system, data types and genomes

Xenbase (http://www.xenbase.org), the Xenopus frog model organism database, integrates a wide variety of data from this biomedical model genus. Two closely related species are represented: the allotetraploid Xenopus laevis that is widely used for microinjection and tissue explant-based protocols, and the diploid Xenopus tropicalis which is used for genetics and gene targeting...

Age-Matched, Case-Controlled Comparison of Clinical Indicators for Development of Entropion and Ectropion

Purpose. To analyze the clinical findings associated with involutional entropion and ectropion and compare them to each other and to age-matched controls. Methods. Prospective, age-matched cohort study involving 30 lids with involutional entropion, 30 lids with involutional ectropion, and 52 age-matched control lids. Results. The statistically significant differences associated...

A Single Gestational Exposure to 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin Disrupts the Adult Uterine Response to Estradiol in Mice

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) given as a cotreatment with estrogen exhibits antiestrogenic properties on the rodent adult uterus, but less is understood regarding hormonal responsiveness of the adult uterus from animals having been exposed to TCDD during critical periods of development. We characterized the inhibitory effects of TCDD (T) exposure at gestational day...

Microdroplet-Enabled Highly Parallel Co-Cultivation of Microbial Communities

Microbial interactions in natural microbiota are, in many cases, crucial for the sustenance of the communities, but the precise nature of these interactions remain largely unknown because of the inherent complexity and difficulties in laboratory cultivation. Conventional pure culture-oriented cultivation does not account for these interactions mediated by small molecules, which...

O6-Methylguanine induces altered proteins at the level of transcription in human cells

O6-Methylguanine (O6-meG), which is produced in DNA following exposure to methylating agents, instructs human RNA polymerase II to mis-insert bases opposite the lesion during transcription. In this study, we examined the effect of O6-meG on transcription in human cells and investigated the subsequent effects on protein function following translation of the resulting mRNA. In...

Spores of Clostridium difficile Clinical Isolates Display a Diverse Germination Response to Bile Salts

Clostridium difficile spores play a pivotal role in the transmission of infectious diarrhoea, but in order to cause disease spores must complete germination and return to vegetative cell growth. While the mechanisms of spore germination are well understood in Bacillus, knowledge of C. difficile germination remains limited. Previous studies have shown that bile salts and amino...

Reconsidering the Sporulation Characteristics of Hypervirulent Clostridium difficile BI/NAP1/027

Clostridium difficile is the leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and a major burden to healthcare services worldwide. In recent years, C. difficile strains belonging to the BI/NAP1/027 type have become highly represented among clinical isolates. These so-called ‘hypervirulent’ strains are associated with outbreaks of increased disease severity, higher relapse rates...

Imbalanced Expression of Vcan mRNA Splice Form Proteins Alters Heart Morphology and Cellular Protein Profiles

The fundamental importance of the proteoglycan versican to early heart formation was clearly demonstrated by the Vcan null mouse called heart defect (hdf). Total absence of the Vcan gene halts heart development at a stage prior to the heart’s pulmonary/aortic outlet segment growth. This creates a problem for determining the significance of versican’s expression in the forming...
