Association between Polymorphisms of X-Ray Repair Cross Complementing Group 1 Gene and Pancreatic Cancer Risk: a Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

Emerging evidences have shown that common genetic polymorphisms in X-ray repair cross complementing group 1 (XRCC1) gene may be associated with the development of pancreatic cancer, but individually published studies and previous meta-analyses revealed inconclusive results. The aim of our study was to investigate the association between polymorphisms in XRCC1 gene and pancreatic ...

Long-term safety of human retinal progenitor cell transplantation in retinitis pigmentosa patients

Background Retinitis pigmentosa is a common genetic disease that causes retinal degeneration and blindness for which there is currently no curable treatment available. Vision preservation was observed in retinitis pigmentosa animal models after retinal stem cell transplantation. However, long-term safety studies and visual assessment have not been thoroughly tested in retinitis ...

Discrete Schrödinger equations in the nonperiodic and superlinear cases: homoclinic solutions

Using variational methods, we study the existence and multiplicity of homoclinic solutions for a class of discrete Schrödinger equations in infinite m-dimensional lattices with nonlinearities being superlinear at infinity. Our results generalize some existing results in the literature by using some weaker conditions.

International tuberculosis research collaborations within Asia

Background Asia bears more than half the global tuberculosis (TB) burden. Economic development in the region has increased available funding for biomedical research and opportunity for collaboration. We explored the extent of international tuberculosis research collaborations between institutions within Asia. Methods We conducted a Pubmed search for all articles with tuberculosis ...

Photocatalytic Properties of Co3O4-Coated TiO2 Powders Prepared by Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition

Co3O4-coated commercial TiO2 powders (P25) p-n junction photocatalysts were prepared by plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) technique. The structure, morphology, bandgap, and photocatalytic properties under ultraviolet light were investigated systematically. Although the deposition of Co3O4 does not change the anatase structure and crystallite size of P25 powders, the ...

Effects of Cu addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-6Zn magnesium alloy

The application of Mg-Zn binary alloys is restricted due to their developed dendritic microstructure and poor mechanical properties. In this study, an alloying method was used to improve the mechanical properties of Mg-Zn alloy. The Mg-6Zn magnesium alloys microalloyed with varying Cu content (0, 0.8, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5wt.%) were fabricated by permanent mould casting, and the effects ...

Social defeat stress causes depression-like behavior with metabolite changes in the prefrontal cortex of rats

Major depressive disorder is a serious mental disorder with high morbidity and mortality. The role of social stress in the development of depression remains unclear. Here, we used the social defeat stress paradigm to induce depression-like behavior in rats, then evaluated the behavior of the rats and measured metabolic changes in the prefrontal cortex using gas chromatography-mass ...

Characterization of the gut microbiota in the golden takin (Budorcas taxicolor bedfordi)

The gut microbiota of mammals is a complex ecosystem, which is essential for maintaining gut homeostasis and the host’s health. The high throughput sequencing allowed us to gain a deeper insight into the bacterial structure and diversity. In order to improve the health status of the endangered golden takins, we first characterized the fecal microbiota of healthy golden takins using ...

Differential gene expression in patients with subsyndromal symptomatic depression and major depressive disorder

Background Subsyndromal symptomatic depression (SSD) is a subtype of subthreshold depressive and can lead to significant psychosocial functional impairment. Although the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD) and SSD still remains poorly understood, a set of studies have found that many same genetic factors play important roles in the etiology of these two disorders. ...

Radiological characteristics of pulmonary cryptococcosis in HIV-infected patients

Background Current understanding of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated pulmonary cryptococcosis (PC) is largely based on studies performed about 2 decades ago which reported that the most common findings on chest radiograph were diffuse interstitial infiltrates. Few studies are available regarding the computed tomography (CT) findings. The aim of this study was to ...
