A list of new nearby dwarf galaxy candidates

To increase completeness of the distance limited sample of nearby galaxies from the the Kraan-Korteweg & Tammann (1979) catalogue we undertook a search for small companions of larger known galaxies which have corrected radial velocities within 500 km/s. Based primarely on the POSS-II and ESO/SERC films we found 260 nearby dwarf galaxy candidates with angular diameters  arcmin...

A supplementary list of southern nearby dwarf galaxy candidates

To improve the census of the Local Volume galaxies, we carried out a systematic search for nearby dwarf galaxies in a declination range of based on the ESO/SERC film copies. As a result, we present a list of 81 nearby dwarf galaxy candidates of low surface brightness which have angular diameters . Half of the objects have been found for the first time. This sample may be...

A list of nearby dwarf galaxies towards the Local Void in Hercules-Aquila

Based on film copies of the POSS-II we inspected a wide area of □° in the direction of the nearest cosmic void: {RA = 18h 38m, , 1500 km s-1}. As a result we present a list of 78 nearby dwarf galaxy candidates which have angular diameters and a mean surface brightness , mag/□″. Of them 22 are in the direction of the Local Void region. To measure their redshifts, a HI survey of...

HI observations of nearby galaxies - I. The first list of the Karachentsev catalog

We present HI observations of the galaxies in the first list of the Karachentsev catalog of previously unknown nearby dwarf galaxies (Karachentseva & Karachentsev 1998). This survey covers all known nearby galaxy groups within the Local Volume (i.e. within 10 Mpc) and their environment, that is about 25% of the total sky. A total of 257 galaxies have been observed with a...

6-m telescope observations of three dwarf spheroidal galaxies with very low surface brightness

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are mostly investigated in the Local Group. DSphs are difficult targets for observations because of their small size and very low surface brightness. Here we measure spectroscopic and photometric parameters of three candidates for isolated dSphs, KKH 65 = BTS23, KK 180, and KK 227, outside the Local Group. The galaxies are found to be of low...

Disturbed isolated galaxies: indicators of a dark galaxy population?

We report the results of our search for disturbed (interacting) objects among very isolated galaxies. The inspections of 1050 northern isolated galaxies from KIG and 500 nearby, very isolated galaxies situated in the Local Supercluster yielded five and four strongly disturbed galaxies, respectively. We suggest that the existence of “dark” galaxies explains the observed signs of...

Photometric properties of the Local Volume dwarf galaxies*

We present surface photometry and metallicity measurements for 104 nearby dwarf galaxies imaged with the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. In addition, we carried out photometry for 26 galaxies of the sample and for Sextans B on images of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our sample comprises dwarf spheroidal...

Dwarf galaxy candidates found on the SERC EJ sky survey

We inspected a sky region with declination range of [ 0°, -18°] based on the SERC EJ plate copies. As a result a list of 50 nearby dwarf galaxy candidates with angular diameters is presented. Most of the galaxies have low and very low surface brightness. More than 60% of the objects are detected for the first time.

Global anisotropy in galaxy orientations

We suggest a new method for investigating the distribution of the orientations of galaxies. This method is used to process data from the UGC and ESO catalogues, and from the catalogue of flat edge-on galaxies compiled by the authors (FGC). A statistically significant anisotropy is detected, and possible reasons for this are analysed. The orientation distribution is described by a...

Distances to nearby galaxies in Sculptor

We present an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of nine nearby galaxies in Sculptor. We derive their distances from the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch stars with a typical accuracy of ∼ 12%. Their distances are 4.21 Mpc (Sc 22), 4.92 Mpc (DDO 226), 3.94 Mpc (NGC 253), 3.40 Mpc (KDG 2), 3.34 Mpc (DDO 6), 3.42 Mpc (ESO 540-030), 4.43 Mpc (ESO 245–05), 4...

Galaxy flow in the Canes Venatici I cloud

We present an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of eighteen galaxies in the Canes Venatici I cloud. We derive their distances from the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch stars with a typical accuracy of ~12%. The resulting distances are 3.9 Mpc (UGC 6541), 4.9 Mpc (NGC 3738), 3.0 Mpc (NGC 3741), 4.5 Mpc (KK 109), > 6.3 Mpc (NGC 4150), 4.2 Mpc (UGC 7298...

The M 81 group of galaxies: New distances, kinematics and structure

. Karachentsev and V. E. Karachentseva, as well as the object HIJASS J1021+6842 (H i cloud?) found by Boyce et al. (2001) in a blind H i survey of the M 81 group. For the two dSph galaxies DDO 78 and K61 we use

The stellar content and distance of UGC 4483

We present HST/WFPC2 observations of UGC 4483, an irregular galaxy in the M81/NGC 2403 complex. Stellar photometry was carried out with HSTphot, and is complete to V≃26.0 and I≃24.7. We measure the red giant branch tip at I=23.56±0.10, and calculate a distance modulus of μ0=27.53±0.12 (corresponding to a distance of 3.2±0.2 Mpc), placing UGC 4483 within the NGC 2403 subgroup. We...

‘Garland’ – an unusual object near NGC 3077

Large-scale photographs are presented for the irregular dwarf object (‘Garland’) which is in contact with NGC 3077. The object resolves into separate complexes of blue stars surrounded by emitting gas. For some knots with mB = 20 – 20.5 mag, radial velocities have been measured. An assumption that the Garland was formed $\sim1\times{10}^{9}$yr ago when NGC 3077 and M81 approached...
