HEP 85

Europhysics Letters Europhysics Letters was launched as scheduled on 1 January and we are already seeing an acceleration in the number of subscribers (which was quite impressive at the outset) and in the num ber of contributors. No. 3 was published on 1 Feb. as a maximum issue of 64 pages. This promises to occur more and more regularly as the weeks go by. The determination to put quality first is reflected in the rejection rate which is currently running at about 50%. Of those accepted about half have been subject to some amendment. Orders from IOMs should be sent to the EPS Secretariat, Price SFR 55.-/a; from others to Editions de Physique, Ave. du Hoggar, Z.l. de Courtaboeuf. F-91944 Les Ulis-Cedex Price SFR 550.-/a. High Power Lasers Innsbruck, 14-18 April, 1986 Fees for this meeting which is a mee ting of the Quantum Electronics Division are high because it is incorporated in a larger conference, but we have been pro mised substantial reductions for IOMs and students. To obtain a reduction call the organizer, Prof. D. Schuöcker, Vienna (Tel.: (022) 57 05 99). If you have diffi culties, tell me or any member of the QED Board. Stig Stenholm. Chairman QE Board, Research Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Helsinki, Siltavuorenpenger 20C, SF-00170 Helsinki, Finland (Tel. Haken of the University of Stuttgart, will take place from 20 April until 9 May 1986, with visits to Portugal, France, Italy and Israel. Prof. Haken is well known for his original work on "Synergetics" but he has also made basic contributions to the quantum field-theory of the solid state, to statistical physics and to quantum optics. Especially for those who plan to attend his lectures. Prof. Haken recommends the following books for introductory reading: H. Haken, Synergetics, An Introduction, 3rd edn./(Springer, Heidelberg) 1983 and H. Haken, Advanced Synerge tics, (Springer, Heidelberg)1983. The subject titles of his lectures are: 1. Synergetics, an overview. 2. Theory of non-equilibrium phase transitions, slaving principle and order para meters. 3. Pattern formation in systems far from thermal equilibrium. 4. Bifurcation theory of tori. His travel schedule is as follows: Date 1986 Location April 21 Lisbon 23 Porto 25 Bordeaux 28 Nice 30 Milano May 4/5 Tel Aviv Jerusalem 6 8 Haifa E T H Lecture(s) 1,3 1,3 1,2 3 1,4 1,3 1 1 Contact Person Prof. V. Research in a field of condensed m atter physics in a broad sense should be instituted. Interdisciplinary collaboration with engi neers and natural scientists is expected. Applicants should have a Ph. D., several years experience of indepen dent research, should be cooperative and willing to teach at all univer sity levels. Applications with curriculum vitae and list of publications should be submitted before 31 March 1986, to: the President of the ETH Zurich, Prof. H. Ursprung, ETH-Zentrum, CH - 8092 Zurich. Europhysics News is the official journal of the European Physical Society which comprises 29 National Socie ties, Academies and Group, over 3500 Individual Mem bers and 73 Associate Members. Governing bodies of EPS are the General Meeting, Council and an elected Executive Committee responsible for detailed policy. EPS promotes the collaboration of physicists through out Europe, organising and harmonising conferences and publications, improving physics education, encou raging physics applications, awarding scholarships to sponsored schools in Erice. EPS publishes in addition to Europhysics News, Europhys. Conf. Abs., Eur. Ed. News, Europhys. Lett, (in partnership with national societies), Eur. J. Phys. (in partnership with The UK Inst, of Phys.). Individual Members receive Europhys. News free of charge (price to institutions: Sw.Fr. 90./a), rebates on the price of many publications and on conference fees. Annual EPS membership fee for Indi vidual Members belonging to an EPS member society is: Sw.Fr. 44.-; independent members: Sw.Fr. 132.-; members of a Collaborating Society: Sw.Fr. 55.- ($ 26).
