Meetings and Directory Issue

BULLETIN OF THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY J. A. Volume 13 news Meetings and Directory Issue Number 6 June 1982 Make European Physics Stronger EPS Publications Included in this Meetings Issue of Europhysics News are two additional documents of high importance to European physics. One comprises the latest list of European physicists leading the European community and taking responsibility for furthering the work of the European Physical Society. The second is a leaflet giving basic infor mation on the Society with an application form for new members. All physicists in Europe benefit from the work of the EPS, but at present less than 10% directly contribute to the costs of its activities, although membership of a natio n a l society may imply an indirect contribution of a few francs. It would be too much to expect that every physicist in Europe became an individual member of EPS but a target of one in three, for example, does not seem unreasonable and, if EPS is not to drift into being an institutionalized federation of societies, it is essential that the indi vidual occupy a prominent position. Why is the present number so low? There are several reasons. In the first place, EPS has a minimal secretariat and no background capital, so cannot indulge in cam paigns that are costly in investment and manpower. Second, most active members of EPS are busy people who already devote much of their spare time to the work that needs doing in their own sector for the European community, and this takes all their effort. Third, physicists are not particularly good sales-men as a rule and fourth, let us admit, there are many scientists who expect to be spoon-fed and to have everything done for them (apart from their own specific research) by bodies supported by the tax-payer. EPS is not financed through governments by the general tax-payer — fortunately. EPS is an organization of physicists for physicists — but that does mean it is also dependent on the support of physicists. Existing individual members, by consulting their membership booklet can check which of their colleagues are not members and, armed with an application form, are urged to ask them why. Why they are content to let the 10% carry all the load of individual membership, why they personally are not helping to make the European community of physicists stronger. Guide to Entries Europhysics News publishes annually three Meetings Issues: in March, June and November. In the March issue the informa tion received to date is given in full; in the two subsequent issues some entries may be abbreviated and marked by an asterisk (*) indicating that full information can be found in the preceding Meetings Issue of Europhysics News. This issue should there fore be read in conjunction with the March 1982 issue. The events listed are those for which details were received at the EPS Secretariat in Geneva by May 1982. In general, all events interesting European physicists which take place from six weeks after the date of publication are quoted. Most rea ders will already have taken their decision regarding earlier events but like to have as long an advance notice as possible of future happenings. The listings are in date order divided into two categories — Conferences and Schools. Europhysics Conferences, i.e. meetings organized by EPS, its Divisions and Sections, are printed in bold type and boxed; events sponsored by EPS are print ed in bold type; Europhysics Study Confe rences are marked by an E preceding the date. For inclusion in the November 1982 issue, organizers should send available details to the EPS Secretariat by 19 Octo ber. Organizers of conferences that are Euro pean in concept may apply for EPS spon sorship through the Secretariat.
