Effect of grain source and brewer's grain on the performance and serum cholesterol concentration of finishing steers

The inclusion of brewer's grains at 20% of the ration dry matter increased dry matter intake, resulting in poorer feed efficiency. Brewer's grain appeared to increase serum cholesterol. Survey of Kansas Cow-calf producers

Results of a 1982 survey were compared to a similar survey conducted 5 years earlier to determine if the acceptance of management practices had changed during that time period. Serum cholesterol concentrations in yearling bulls

A wide range in serum cholesterol concentrations was observed within and between all four breeds of yearling bulls studied. The significance of this observation is unknown at this time. Addition research is necessary to determine the heritability of serum cholesterol, and the relationship between serum cholesterol of sires and the tissue cholesterol of their progeny.

A comparison of selected breed crosses on growth rate during long-term grazing

Brahman crossbred and Simmental crossbred calves gained similarly during a 312-day, native range grazing study. Longhorn crossbreds gained less than the Brahman or Simmental crosses but more than the British crossbreds, which served as controls. Most of the gain advantage was obtained during the summer portion (April 30-September 20) of the project.

Effect of Lasalocid on the sexual development of beef heifers

Lasalocid (Bovatec®) improved daily gain of replacement heifers by .20 lb per day and reduced the time to first heat in heifers fed on a lower level of energy, but had no significant affect in the higher energy group. Feeding Lasalocid did not affect conception rates.

Comparative feeding value of grain sorghum and corn in beef cattle diets

Homozygous yellow endosperm grain sorghum had no advantage in feeding value over heterozygous yellow endosperm hybrids (P>.05). Adding fat and/or sodium bicarbonate to steer finishing rations that contain wheat

Adding .6 pound fat or .22 pound sodium bicarbonate (soda) to finishing rations containing rolled wheat significantly improved performance and appeared to increase the substitution value of wheat. Efficacy of DEPO-MGA® in feedlot heifers

Three levels of melengestrol acetate (30, 60, and 90 mg) injected subcutaneously as a liquid (DEPO-MGA ®) in the ear of heifers yielded high performance results comparable to feeding 0.5 mg of MGA per head daily. Effects of Rumensin® ruminal delivery devices in grazing cattle on subsequent feedlot performance

Rumensin® Ruminal Delivery Devices put in place 76 days prior to steers entering a feedlot resulted in an average reduction in daily dry matter intake of 3.6% and a small 1.8% increase in daily gain during a controlled 28-day feeding phase. All steers were fed an 85% concentrate feedlot diet fortified with 30g/ton of Rumensin® and 10 g/ton of tylan®.

Feeding cull beef cows in feedlots

I conducted two trails during 1977 using 115 cows culled from KSU cow herds. Dry cows on lush brome grass gained 1.5 pounds per head per day. Those on a 60% concentrate ration average 2.2 pounds/day; those on 80% concentrate ration, 3.7 pounds/hd/day. The cull, dry cows ate between 23 and 30 pounds of dry matter/day. Influence of sustained rumensin release on steer performance and forage utilization

Steers managed within an intensive-early stocking program and receiving Rumensin® via a slow-release bolus tended to have higher average daily gains than steers not receiving Rumensin. However, forage organic matter intake, fill, digestibility, and diet selection showed little response to Rumensin administration.

Effect of limit-fed, high energy growing rations on the performance of feedlot steers

There were no significant differences in performance or carcass traits for finishing cattle implanted with either Synovex-S® or STEER-oid®. The 122-day trial used 180 steers, with each treatment having 15 replicates.

Medication programs for newly received calves

Three medication programs for newly purchased feeder calves were compared and found to be similar in effectiveness. There was considerable variation in cost between the three medication programs which indicates a potential cost saving opportunity. Twenty-three percent of the calves received were diagnosed as sick at least once during the 56-day trial.

Effects of Rumensin or Rumensin-Tylan combination on steer performance and liver abscess control

Combining Tylan with Rumensin dramatically reduced abscessed liver incidence, compared with that of steers fed a non-medicated control ration or Rumensin without Tylan.
