Salmon on the Brink: The Imperative of Integrating Environmental Standards and Review on an Ecosystem Scale

This Article examines the interplay between the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act, the necessity of applying these statutes under an ecosystem or watershed based model, and the need to coordinate and integrate standards and review processes under the acts. The concept of watershed management is summarized in Part II, and Part III gives a brief overview of the two...

Sources of supplemental protein for cows wintered on milo stubble

We used 63 pregnant Hereford cows in mid gestation to evaluate need and source of supplemental protein on milo stubble. Cows fed free choice a 16% experimental nonprotein-nitrogen-based liquid supplement lost significantly more weight than cows receiving 2 lbs/head/day of a 16% natural protein cube or cows getting no protein supplement. Cows with access free choice to an 18...

Early weaning and creep feeding calves in drylot

Performances of 125 commercial Hereford-cross and percentage Simmental calves were evaluated by comparing early weaning at 50 days of age (+25), nursing calves receiving a creep in drylot, and calves nursing in drylot without creep. Both a starter and growing creep were tested. Early weaned calves gained more (261 lbs., 299 lbs.) than either creep fed (251 lbs., 277 lbs.) or...

Soybean meal and Starea (R) blocks compared by wintering cows on bluestem pasture: effects on birth and weaning weights of calves

Similar gains and adjusted weaning weights can be expected from calves whose dams are wintered on soybean meal or Starea protein blocks. Rebreeding time is expected to be similar for both groups of dams.

Supplemental feed for calves prior to weaning

A mixture of 60% dehydrated alfalfa crumbles and 40% dry rolled sorghum grain was fed ad lib to calves 30 days before weaning. The calves ate an average of 2.6 lbs. per day and gained 0.32 lbs more per day average during the 30 days than calves receiving no supplemental feed. During the next 30 days all calves received the ration ad lib. Calves continuing on the ration gained 0...
