Topological evolution of coexpression networks by new gene integration maintains the hierarchical and modular structures in human ancestors

We analyze the global structure and evolution of human gene coexpression networks driven by new gene integration. When the Pearson correlation coefficient is greater than or equal to 0.5, we find that the coexpression network consists of 334 small components and one “giant” connected subnet comprising of 6317 interacting genes. This network shows the properties of power-law...

Morphine induces changes in the gut microbiome and metabolome in a morphine dependence model

Opioid analgesics are frequently prescribed in the United States and worldwide. However, serious comorbidities, such as dependence, tolerance, immunosuppression and gastrointestinal disorders limit their long-term use. In the current study, a morphine-murine model was used to investigate the role of the gut microbiome and metabolome as a potential mechanism contributing to the...

Sensitivity Analysis of the APEX Model for Assessing Sustainability of Switchgrass Grown for Biofuel Production in Central Texas

Crop simulation models are increasingly being used to understand the feasibility of large-scale cellulosic biofuel production along with the multi-dimensional impacts on environmental sustainability. However, how the uncertainty in model parameters impacts model performance for sustainability is unclear. In this case study, sensitivity analyses were conducted for three...

Insight into Central Asian flora from the Cenozoic Tianshan montane origin and radiation of Lagochilus (Lamiaceae)

The Tianshan Mountains play a significant role in the Central Asian flora and vegetation. Lagochilus has a distribution concentration in Tianshan Mountains and Central Asia. To investigate generic spatiotemporal evolution, we sampled most Lagochilus species and sequenced six cpDNA locations (rps16, psbA-trnH, matK, trnL-trnF, psbB-psbH, psbK-psbI). We employed BEAST Bayesian...

Association of maternal hypertensive disorders with retinopathy of prematurity: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Backgroud The role of maternal hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) in the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is unclear. Methods Studies were retrieved through literature searches in PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library up to May 5, 2016 without language restrictions. Cohort or case–control studies that reported the association of maternal...

The involvement and possible mechanism of pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum

Thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum (TOLF) is characterized by ectopic bone formation in the ligamentum flavum and is considered to be a leading cause of thoracic spinal canal stenosis and myelopathy. However, the underlying etiology is not well understood. An iTRAQ proteomics was used to reveal the involvement of inflammation factors in TOLF. TNF-α is a pro...

Microsatellite markers from tea green leafhopper Empoasca (Matsumurasca) onukii: a powerful tool for studying genetic structure in tea plantations

Background Tea green leafhopper is one of the most dominant pests in Chinese tea plantations. Recent evidence, including morphological and molecular data, revealed that tea green leafhopper in China is the same species as in Japan, Empoasca (Matsumurasca) onukii Matsuda. Previous morphological study that revealed variation in the structure of the male genitalia within and among...

Group divisible designs of four groups and block size five with configuration (1; 1; 1; 2)

We present constructions and results about GDDs with four groups and block size five in which each block has Configuration $(1, 1, 1, 2)$, that is, each block has exactly one point from three of the four groups and two points from the fourth group. We provide the necessary conditions of the existence of a GDD$(n, 4, 5; \lambda_1, \lambda_2)$ with Configuration $(1, 1, 1, 2)$, and...

Iron Status in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in children. However, the pathogenesis of ADHD remains unclear. Iron, an important trace element, is implicated in brain function and dopaminergic activity. Recent studies have investigated the association between iron deficiency and ADHD, but the results are inconsistent...

Phylogeographic History of Atraphaxis Plants in Arid Northern China and the Origin of A. bracteata in the Loess Plateau

In China, species of Atraphaxis (Polygonaceae) primarily inhabit arid zones across temperate steppe and desert regions. The complex geologic history (e.g., expansion of deserts) and extreme climate shifts of the region appear to have played an important role in shaping the phylogeography of Atraphaxis. The present study focuses on species-level phylogeographic patterns of...

GABAB receptor-dependent bidirectional regulation of critical period ocular dominance plasticity in cats

Gama amino butyric acid (GABA) inhibition plays an important role in the onset and offset of the critical period for ocular dominance (OD) plasticity in the primary visual cortex. Previous studies have focused on the involvement of GABAA receptors, while the potential contribution of GABAB receptors to OD plasticity has been neglected. In this study, the GABAB receptor antagonist...

Application of momentum backpropagation algorithm (MOBP) in identification of low-resistivity pay zones in sandstones

Low-resistivity pay zones with substantial reserves in many oilfields around the world are drawing more attention than ever before. Through analyzing the features of the logging data in low-resistivity pay zones, a fast model for identification of low-resistivity pay zones was developed in this paper. Momentum backpropagation algorithm was used in the model development...

Calcium Reduces Liver Injury in Mice on a High-Fat Diet: Alterations in Microbial and Bile Acid Profiles

A high-fat “Western-style” diet (HFWD) promotes obesity-related conditions including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the histologic manifestation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In addition to high saturated fat and processed carbohydrates, the typical HFWD is deficient in calcium. Calcium-deficiency is an independent risk factor for many conditions associated...

Cyclopamine tartrate, an inhibitor of Hedgehog signaling, strongly interferes with mitochondrial function and suppresses aerobic respiration in lung cancer cells

Background Aberrant Hedgehog (Hh) signaling is associated with the development of many cancers including prostate cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, and basal cell carcinoma. The Hh signaling pathway has been one of the most intensely investigated targets for cancer therapy, and a number of compounds inhibiting Hh signaling are being...
