IceTag™ Devices: Feasibility for Measuring Activity and Postures in Gilts

The objectives of this project were 1) explore the feasibility of securing the IceTag™ device on sexually mature gilts, 2) determine effects of IceTag™ device on gilt behavior, and 3) compare IceTag™ data from gilts against the gold standard-behavioral data manually collected by a trained observer. Four individually housed bred gilts (~200kg) were used. The treatments were as...

Grass-Finishing High Value Beef: A Pilot Project in Northern United States

This project examined the feasibility of producing USDA Choice beef—without grain-based finishing—through genetic selection and pasture management. Purebred Angus heifers with high-marbling potential and small/medium frame size were born spring 2011. Heifers were allotted to either pasture (grass-finishing) or feedlot (grain-fed) treatments based on liveweight and intramuscular...

Litter Use in an Aviary Laying Hen Housing System

Litter use by hens was investigated by recording the number of hens moving to and from the litter in an aviary housing system. Findings showed a difference in litter use between different times and pens. These findings are being contributed as one component of a comprehensive assessment of an aviary laying hen housing system.

Embedded Micro-Computer Base Force Plate as an Objective Tool to Measure Hoof Lameness Phases in Multiparous Sows

The objective of this study was to compare differences in weight placed on each hoof from sows in differing lameness phases. Twelve, clinically healthy, mixed-parity, crossbred sows (228.89±19.17 kg) were used. The sow was the experimental unit and a cross-over design with a 2 (hind left and hind right hoof) x 3 (days: D-1, D+1 and D+6) factorial arrangement of treatments were...

Using Classification Trees to Detect Lameness in Sows

Developing an automatic lameness diagnosis algorithm will benefit scientists and producers in timely and effective identification of lame individuals before clinical signs are apparent as well as aid producers in their efforts to decrease herd lameness. Being able to predict the lameness in sows can aid in delivering maximum animal health benefits, improving sow lifetime...

Yohimbine (alpha 2-antagonistic reversal agent) Effect on Return to Sensibility in Anesthetized Sows

Swine may be anesthetized in order to complete routine `production procedures or surgical operations. Swine are difficult to restrain, effectively anesthetize, and their response and reaction to anesthesia can vary substantially. The objective of this study was to determine if Y is an effective anesthetic reversal agent in mature sows. Twelve, clinically normal, mixed-parity...

Pharmacokinetics of flunixin meglumine in mature swine after intravenous, intramuscular and oral administration

Background The purpose of this study was to determine intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM) and oral (PO) FM PK in mature swine. Appropriate pain management for lameness in swine is a critical control point for veterinarians and producers, but science-based guidance on optimal housing, management and treatment of lameness is deficient. Six mature swine (121–168 kg) were...
