Genetic barcoding and preliminary phylogenetic analysis of Serranidae species from Maltese coastal waters, with a perspective on their Mediterranean phylogeography

Ten species of the Serranidae Family sampled from the Mediterranean, including two non-native species, were identified using molecular genetic tools. Two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and Cytochrome b (Cyt b) genes were studied covering a total of 980 bp of which 360 bp exhibited genetic differences. Within species the members of the genus Serranus...

Population Structuring and Migration Pathway of Atlantic bonito Sarda sarda

Population structure of Atlantic Bonito Sarda sarda in the Mediterranean Sea and possible pathway of migration for spawning and feeding was discussed on the bases of genetic and morphological dataset. The effects of topographic and hydrographic factors on the connectivity and migration pattern of Atlantic Bonito in Turkish, Bulgarian and Croatian marine waters and fishery...

The Effects of Rosemary Extract (Rosemaria officinalis) as a Feed Additive on Growth and Whole-body Composition of the African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822))

A preliminary study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the Rosemary extract (Rosemaria officinalis) on growth performance, feed utilization and body composition of the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus, Burchell, 1822). Fish with an average body weight of 10.59±0.31 g were fed with different concentrations (0, 0.25 and 0.5 %) of Rosemary extract at dietary for 60 days. At...

Environmental DNA for Detection of Endangered Grouper Species (Epinephelus spp.)

Marine ecosystems nestle species or populations known to be threatened due to human overexploitation. Reliable detection and monitoring of threatened organisms is crucial for data-driven conservation actions. Furthermore, misidentification of species represents a major problem. Here, we investigate the potential of using metabarcoding of environmental DNA (eDNA) obtained directly...

Microsatellite loci for Black Sea turbot Scophthalmus maeoticus

Several microsatellite loci which were developed and reported for turbot Scophthalmus maximus were examined for Scophthalmus maeoticus. Only five of these microsatellite loci were successfully amplified with new developed PCR conditions and can be used for routine analysis of stock identification of S. maeoticus.

Antibacterial Actions and Potential Phototoxic Effects of Volatile oils of Foeniculum sp. (fennel), Salvia sp. (sage), Vitis sp. (grape), Lavandula sp. (lavender)

In the present study, the volatile compounds of essential oil of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel), Salvia officinalis (sage), Vitis vinifera (grape), Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using the Nist and Willey libraries. It was determined that the main components of Foeniculum sp. were anethole (41.11%), carvacrol (9.18...

Performance Evaluation of Mobile Base Station under different Network Sizes on Cluster-Based Wireless Sensor Networks

The position of the base station (BS) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has a significant impact on network lifetime. This paper suggests a mobile BS positioning algorithm for clusterbased WSNs, which considers both the location and the remaining energy level of the cluster heads in the network and evaluate the performance of the algorithm under different values of network sizes...

An Assessment of Egg Size in The Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) on Samandağ Beach, Turkey

Many environmental factors such as temperature and moisture are known to influence the eggs of sea turtles. Egg diameter, egg circumference and egg weight were compared in the three stages on Samandağ beach, Turkey. Also, distance from sea, total nest depth, total eggs (clutch size), number of unhatched eggs were measured. In total, 284 eggs from 44 nests were measured. There...

First record red lionfish Pterois volitans (Linnaeus, 1785) in the Mediterranean Sea

A single male specimen of red lionfish Pterois volitans was recorded for the first time in 13 May 2016 from the Iskenderun Bay, North-eastern Mediterranean, Turkey. The present paper also reports the first record of the red lionfish P. volitans along the Mediterranean Sea.

A 5th order video band elliptic filter topology using OTRA based Fleischer Tow Biquad with MOS-C Realization

A new 5th order video band elliptic filter topology is presented. In video applications high order elliptic filters were used. The proposed 5th-order lowpass filter was simulated with PSPICE simulation program. The elliptic filter configuration consists of two cascade connected lowpass notch filters and a lowpass filter which is obtained using OTRA based Fleischer Tow biquad...

First record of the Indo-Pacific striped eel catfish, Plotosus lineatus (Thunberg, 1787) from Turkish marine waters

Three specimens of striped eel catfish, Plotosus lineatus (Thunberg, 1787) were caught by a spear gun at depths of 20 m on 4 April 2016 from Iskenderun Bay (Çevlik harbour), Northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. With the present study, P. lineatus is the first time reported from Turkish marine waters, in the Iskenderun Bay, the Northeastern Mediterranean and also this is...

The Effects of Season and Sex on the Nutritional Quality of Muscle Types of Blue Crab Callinectes sapidus and Swimming Crab Portunus segnis

The effects of season and sex on the nutritional quality of muscle types (lump crab meatLCM, claw crab meat-CCM) of swimming crab (Portunus segnis) and blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) were investigated. Carapace width, carapace length and total weight of both crab species were measured. High protein content in spring and low protein content in autumn were observed for both crab...
