Albinism is a genetic abnormality, it can manifest as hypopigmentation or absence of color in skin, fur and eyes. The survival rate of wild animals with albinism is usually low. This paper reports the record of a platinum albino female of painted spiny pocket mouse Liomys pictus from Guerrero state, Mexico.

Carnivorous mammals in the Lacandon rainforest have been previously listed during the past fifty years. The continuous actualisation of those lists allow us to complete inventories and to detect changes on species richness and composition as a result of human activities. The Lacandon rainforest has lost more than three quarters of its original vegetation cover in the past forty...

As a result of our research on Sturnira in biological collections, we present a noteworthy range extension for S. koopmanhilli. The distribution of this taxon, has been previously suggested to be associated to the Biogeographic Chocó, in Colombia and Ecuador (especially related to the occidental Andean slope). The specimens we report not only confirm this geographic pattern, but...

Costa Rica is a country whose geographical location plays an important role as a filter for species from North y South-America resulting in the establishment a great diversity of species. In Costa Rica there have been registered a total of 245 species of mammals of the 4,381 registered worldwide, having the 5.6% of global diversity. From the 245 species, only 48 species are...

The karyotype of Peromyscus grandis (Rodentia: Cricetidae)

Peromyscus grandis is a rodent whose distribution is restricted to the mountain ranges of central Guatemala. This note represents the first report of karyotypic data for this species. The karyotype (fundamental number = 58) closely resembles karyotypes of other species of Peromyscus.

The region of Los Chimalapas, in the southeastern Mexico has a high biodiversity, but it faces problems of habitat loss, primarily by livestock and agricultural activities. A group that can provide data on these changes is that of the mammals of the order Carnivora, because its members have a variety of size classes, trophic guild or ecological function and respond differently to...

As in most of the wolf subspecies, sexual behavior in Mexican wolf is shown in late winter once a year. Reproductive cycle in female wolves includes seasonality and monoestrum, with a long anestrus period. Estrogens and progesterone are responsible for estrus appearance and presence of both seems to be necessary for the full stimulation of sexual behavior in female wolves. In...

The principal factors that contribute to the conservation of large carnivorous mammals are, the increase in human density, the amount of remnant natural habitat, land use change and hunting (of the species and their natural preys). In order to take effective conservation actions is necessary to understand all the dimensions of the human-carnivore conflict. One alternative is to...

I introduce the northernmost record of Peropteryx pallidoptera in the Savanna of Colombian Orinoquia. The herein presented record extends the distribution of the specie 563 km northeast from previously reported records in the country. This record occurs in an ecosystem with different environmental characteristics to those reported in previous works.

We record the injuries caused to two bats marked with a self-locking plastic cable tie as a necklace which produced a deep abrasion in the skin of neck area. This is the first report about negative effects caused by the inadequate use of marking methods in bats from Colombia.

Investigations into the feeding habits of the Neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis annectens in the Bavispe-Yaqui river basin were conducted based on 73 scats collected from 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2002. Neotropical otters feed mainly on various species of fishes (58%), insects (30%), mammals (3.7%), amphibians (0.7%), reptiles (0.7%), birds (5.8%) and mollusks (1.5%). Fish prey...

We report information on the distribution, abundance and food habits of the Neotropical river otter Lontra longicaudis annectens, based on 386 collected scats (281 in the dry season, and 105 in the rainy season). The distribution along a 39.5 km transect was similar in both rainy and dry seasons. The estimates of relative abundance using two models varied according to rates...

The scarce Mexican fossil record for the Neotropical otter Lontra longicaudis (Carnívora, Mustelidae, Lutrini) is synthesized. The two available records, previously reported under different species name, are the only ones known from the Pleistocene of America. Also, three archaeological records suggest that this animal may have been known by the Prehispanic people in the country.

The habitat of the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis) at La Vega Escondida Protected Area (LVPA), located in southern Tamaulipas, is surrounded by an expanding urban landscape. Wetlands in this region are under an intense pressure due to several anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, livestock and commercial fisheries. The main goals of this study were to evaluate...

Neotropical otter is a medium to large size species, adult male has a mean size of 142 ± 11 cm (range: 130 - 162 cm, n = 9), with a mean body mass of 16 ± 5 kg (range: 10 - 24 kg, n = 9); adult female has a mean size of 116 ± 9 cm (range: 109-127 cm, n = 4) with a mean body mass of 13 ± 2 kg (range: 10-15 kg, n = 4). A growth curve was performed using data from size-body mass...

The Neotropical river otter (Lontra longicaudis annectes) is a carnivore of wide distribution, poorly studied and their populations are subjected to considerable pressure all over its range, the otter is closely linked to shore ecosystems, therefore a description of the their distribution is basic to allow conservation. By knowing the otter's preferred locations, it will be...

Perspectiva histórica de las Nutrias en México

The historical happenings of México is presented in the context of the intimate relationship with the different species of otters found in Mexican territory, from historic records, based in codex and legends of the Aztecs, Colonial times, Independence and Contemporary México.

In this study, we compared a new population of Rhipidomys from the Sierra de Aroa-Yaracuy State in Venezuela with taxa included within the R. fulviventer section sensu Tribe (1996). We used geometric morphometrics from selected landmarks on the skull, and mandible of three species of Rhipidomys, and three subspecies of R. fulviventer housed in Venezuelan museums. We grouped every...

The tepezcuintle (Cuniculus paca) is one of the largest living rodents of Latin America. In many rural and indigenous communities, it is the most consumed wild mammal by its inhabitants, so its populations are subjected to considerable pressure, mainly by hunting and alteration and removal of its habitat. Our study estimated population density of the tepezcuintle and its temporal...

We compared three acoustic systems for monitoring ultrasound (UltraMic200K, Rome, Italy; Echo Meter EM3, Concord, USA; and AnabatTM SD2, Brisbane, Australia) in order to infer relative activity of insectivorous bats under similar conditions, which presumably could implicate bias, but is evidence of the difficulty of comparing data sets generated in the same area with different...

Echolocation calls for insectivorous bats vary within species; therefore a description for each locality of study is needed to allow species identification. We present here description of the echolocation calls for eleven aerial insectivorous bat species from a tropical dry forest in Morelos, México. The ultrasound sequences were recorded in time expansion mode (10x) using...
