The November 2022 cover paper

J Mater Sci E D I T O R I AL Editorial The November 2022 cover paper C. Barry Carter1,* 1 Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT 06239, USA Ó The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2022 The cover for the November 2022 issues of the Journal of Materials Science comes from the paper by Tunes et al. which appeared in issue #35 from September 2022 [1]. The paper was handled by our Editor N. (Ravi) Ravishankar. First, full disclosure: as a consulting scientist at Sandia National Labs, the author of this Editorial does interact with researchers at the Los Alamos Labs and has a long-term interest in using the FIB for research and in phase transformations caused by energetic beams [2]. The topic of this paper relates to many aspects of materials science including the continuing (renewed) interest in fission- and fusion-based nuclear reactors. The introduction lays out the background succinctly. The background to the experiments is that the new generation of FIBs with a plasma-focused ion beam (PFIB) using a Xe? ion gun gives a means to produce localized damage of any material. The authors propose this as a ‘‘proof of concept’’ that assesses the possibility of using such a PFIB as a new tool for the radiation-effects community. Of course, the paper complements the SEM imaging, which is intrinsic to the FIB, with imaging and diffraction in the TEM. The quantification of when the bend contours disappear as a result of the amorphization by the ion beam is classic. The results of the amorphization experiments are nicely complemented by computation, including modeling cascade-damage profiles. Don’t forget to check out the image in the supplementary data. The paper does also have a SharedIt link like all articles in JMS (https://rdcu.be/cWW0L) so it can be widely and immediately shared with readers; all papers published in JMS are free-to-read using the SharedIt link from the moment they appear online with their permanent DOI.
