Helen Keller becomes blind and deaf as an infant from an illness.
She then has to learn how to cope with life without being able to
see or hear anything, and she is very frustrated because she cannot
communicate with anyone anymore. A dear teacher, Anne Sullivan,
comes into her life and teaches her Braille as well as sign language,
and eventually Helen learns how to speak out loud. She is then able to
communicate with others, and she goes on to accomplish many things
in her life that most people thought she would never be able to do.
When she graduates from college, she becomes an advocate for those
with disabilities.
This book depicts the life of Helen Keller in a way that children can
understand. What an amazing book for children to read to learn
about the life and legacy of Hellen Keller. Children will learn about the
struggles that she had as a child, and it will be easy for them to relate
since she was a child when she was learning how to communicate
with others. When reading this book, one will see the importance of
teachers in children’s lives as well, and children can relate if they have
had a teacher change their life. I Am Helen Keller is a great book with a
great message for kids.
