The Supervillain and Me

Children's Book and Media Review, Dec 2018

Abby Hamilton is the younger sister of the Red Comet, her city's most beloved superhero. Abby just wants to get the lead role in her school's musical, and maybe get a few minutes of attention from her father and her busy superhero brother. But when a new supervillain, the Iron Phantom, arrives in town and begins to talk to Abby, things get a bit more complicated. Between rehearsing for the musical, hiding secrets from her family and best friend, trying to help the Phantom with unraveling a dastardly conspiracy, and subsequently dealing with her budding feelings for the Iron Phantom, Abby has a lot on her plate. The people of Morriston might believe that only superheroes can save the day, but Abby shows that anyone with courage and determination can be a hero.

The people of Morriston might believe that only superheroes can save the day, but Abby shows that anyone with courage and determination can be a hero. This is a fun read that is surprisingly substantial. Although it is definitely a romance book wrapped up in the guise of superhero fantasy, the superheroes and villains are still intriguing and fun. Abby is a relatable and likeable character, and the supporting cast is wellwritten too. The plot is fast-paced and exciting, but readers still get enough clues along the way to stay ahead of the characters at times. The climax is a little formulaic and contrived, and the bad guys are stereotypically evil and maybe just a little bit misunderstood, but overall the plot events are satisfying and conclusive. The romance is sweet and different enough that teen romance fans will greatly enjoy this read. The Supervillain and Me is a great, lighthearted young adult novel that superhero fans and romance fans alike will love. *Contains severe language, moderate violence, and mild sexual content.
