The ‘Consensus Reporting Items for Studies in Primary Care’ (CRISP)
statement in the European Journal of General Practice
In November 2023, the European Journal of General
Practice (EJGP) editorial team received an email from
William R. Phillips on behalf of the author group of the
CRISP (Consensus Reporting Items for Studies in Primary
Care) statement, published in the November/December
2023 issue of the Annals of Family Medicine [1]. The
authors requested EJGP to consider (a) including the
statement in its ‘Instructions for Authors’ and (b) addressing the CRISP statement in an editorial.
The EJGP editorial team discussed this topic in its
December 2023 and March 2024 meetings. The editors
saw as the key feature of the statement that primary care
authors should be aware of reporting the context of their
research, i.e. general practice/family medicine/primary
care. In addition to other reporting guidelines, we saw
the tips for the Introduction and Discussion sections of
a manuscript as a benefit of the CRISP statement. We
found the guidance in the Methods section less relevant
since ‘context’ is an essential element in other reporting
guidelines. Setting, recruitment, study population/sample,
comparison groups, and description of qualitative studies
are universal reporting elements.
There was consensus among the editorial team that
we should include the CRISP statement in the EJGP
Instructions for Authors, although not as a compulsory
requirement. The CRISP statement and checklist can be
found on the CRISP website [2] and accessed through
the Equator Network website [3].
