Ever since the Indian Academy of Sciences inherited the publication of the Journal of Genetics from J. B. S. Haldane,
successive Editors-in-Chief, Profs H. Sharat Chandra, K. VijayRaghavan, Amitabh Joshi and Rajiva Raman, with the
support of members of the editorial board, have not only sustained but also expanded the scope of the journal. The
journey of the journal under the aegis of the Academy started with vol. 64, published during 1985, and the journal has
been evolving since then, expanding its repertoire to article categories such as Research Article, Review Article, Research
Note, Research Commentary, Hypothesis, Viewpoint, Correspondence, Perspectives, Online Resources etc. The journal
should be moving to Continuous Article Publication (CAP) mode in the very near future. Frequently, special issues on
specific themes have also been published, and a special issue on the Genetics of Neurodegeneration will be published in
2018.
This year, the Board of Associate Editors and Editors of the Journal of Genetics have undergone considerable reshuffling. Many stalwarts have left and many younger people have taken on new responsibilities. The Indian Academy of
Sciences has assigned to me the responsibility of being Editor-in-Chief of this journal. With all humility, I have accepted
this assignment. On behalf of the Academy and myself, it is my pleasure to welcome all associate editors and editorial
board members, and to invite them, along with the broader genetics and evolution community in India, to serve this
prestigious journal. As one of the objectives of the publications of the Academy is to project the research contributions
of our laboratories, let us hope that more indigenous Indian genetics and evolution research will get promoted through
the Journal of Genetics. Further, the onus is on us to see that the journal should scale new peaks in its journey to patronize
the best pieces of research in genetics and evolution, leading to further expansion in its readership.
