Reviews may be submitted on any subject relevant to
medical and veterinary mycology that is presently covered by the Journal. They should be submitted in standard journal format, and may take either of two formats:
full review papers or mini-reviews. Full review articles
must provide a critical overview of the area chosen for
analysis — they should not simply comprise a chronological regurgitation of published papers but should seek
to bring cohesion and relevant criticism to the topic
considered. Mini-reviews will comprise shorter articles, in
which the author(s) will be able to consider areas of
particular interest to themselves, which may be controversial and more hypothesis driven. In both cases, the
refereeing process will be carried out as quickly as possible, and articles will be published as soon as possible
after acceptance. The Journal is fully aware that reviews
contain uniquely time-sensitive material that should be
published at the earliest opportunity. Finally, it is very
much hoped that an increase in the number of published
reviews will improve the quality and content of the Journal and contribute to its continuing success.
Andy Hamilton
The Journal Medical Mycology has recently expanded its
editorial board to include the new position of Reviews
Editor that will be held in the rst instance by Dr Andy
Hamilton, who was previously an Associate Editor on
the Journal. Reviews have always been an important
component of the Journal (and its predecessors) and it is
hoped that the appointment of a dedicated reviews editor
will lead to an increase in both the number and quality of
reviews published in Medical Mycology. Dr Hamilton
will actively solicit reviews from individuals as is felt
appropriate, and in addition, will be prepared to consider
unsolicited reviews (as has been the situation regarding
reviews published previously by the Journal). Individuals
who wish to submit reviews should initially submit an
outline plan (on no more than one page of A4 paper), to
Dr Hamilton, who will then advise the potential author
as to whether they should proceed to full submission. The
criteria that Dr Hamilton will use in his decision are
varied, but factors such as the postulated content, the
timeliness of the piece and the relevance of the review
relative to the author’s contribution will be important.
The standard journal refereeing process will be used in
the case of both solicited and unsolicited reviews.
