Handoff management in communication-based train control networks using stream control transmission protocol and IEEE 802.11p WLANs

Communication-based train control (CBTC) network is an automated control network for railways that ensures the safe operation of rail vehicles using data communications. CBTC networks have stringent requirements for communication availability and latency. Wireless local area network (WLAN) is a popular choice in CBTC networks due to the available commercial-off-the-shelf WLAN...

Dynamic rate-adaptive MIMO mode switching between spatial multiplexing and diversity

In this article, we propose a dynamic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mode switching scheme between spatial multiplexing and diversity modes, which also includes adaptive modulation. At each transmission, we select the modulation level and the MIMO mode that maximize the spectral efficiency while satisfying a given target bit error rate. The dynamic MIMO mode scheme...

Multi-hop transmission and routing with hierarchical modulation

Hierarchical modulation multiplexes layers of different robustness into one stream. Usually being exploited in broadcast systems such as digital video broadcasting, hierarchical modulation can also be applied to unicast communications in a cooperative manner. This article deals with novel multi-hop cooperative transmission and routing strategies with hierarchical modulation. In...

Achieving per-flow and weighted fairness for uplink and downlink in IEEE 802.11 WLANs

In this article, we investigate a fairness issue between uplink and downlink flows in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). We propose a cross-layer adaptive algorithm which dynamically adjusts the minimum contention window size of access point according to the amount of downlink users and channel conditions to achieve per-flow fairness. In case that uplink and...

SNR-aware and power-efficient multicast cooperative routing algorithm in wireless networks

Power-efficient multicast routing is an active research field in wireless networks because most network nodes are powered by battery. However, this kind of multicast routing only considers the transmission radius coverage without addressing whether the signal quality is able to meet bandwidth requirement of the users. In this article, by leveraging on the Maximum Ratio Combining...

Joint path and spectrum diversity in cognitive radio ad-hoc networks

Abstract The uncertain availability of the spectral resource imposes unique challenges in cognitive radio networks. One of the critical issues is to counteract the performance degradation experienced by cognitive users (CUs) due to the activity of primary users (PUs). Since the activity of PUs varies both in frequency and space domain, diversity techniques can represent an...

Rate allocation based on spectrum pricing function in collaborative transmission over heterogeneous wireless access networks

This article studied rate allocation in collaborative transmission over heterogeneous wireless access networks. With the introduced pricing function, which uses the occupied spectrum to describe the cost in data transmission, rate allocation is formulated as a concave optimization problem and the explicit solution has been obtained. Instead of transmitting through all available...

On the applicability of steerable beams in LTE-Advanced networks with high user mobility

This article deals with the problem of applying scanning narrow beams to long-term evolution (LTE)-advanced networks that include in their coverage areas fast moving mobiles. The system scenario is assumed to include eNodeBs that can form multiple beams which can steer (rotate) their respective coverage areas. Additionally, the user downlink transmissions are supposed to be...

Kalman interpolation filter for channel estimation of LTE downlink in high-mobility environments

The estimation of fast-fading LTE downlink channels in high-speed applications of LTE advanced is investigated in this article. In order to adequately track the fast time-varying channel response, an adaptive channel estimation and interpolation algorithm is essential. In this article, the multi-path fast-fading channel is modelled as a tapped-delay, discrete, finite impulse...

Distributed stochastic power control in ad hoc networks: a nonconvex optimization case

Signal-to-interference-plus-noise-based power allocation in wireless ad hoc networks is inherently a nonconvex optimization problem because of the global coupling induced by the co-channel interference. To tackle this challenge, we first show that the globally optimal point lies on the boundary of the feasible region. This property is utilized to transform the utility...

Optimal pilot symbol power allocation under time-variant channels

Nowadays, most wireless communication systems employ coherent demodulation on the receiver side. Under this circumstance, part of the available transmission resource is reserved and utilized for channel estimation, referred to as pilot symbols. In recent standards, for example long-term evolution (LTE), a certain adjustment is allowed for the power radiated on the pilot symbols...

A unified view of diversity in multiantenna-multicarrier systems: analysis and adaptation strategies

Multicarrier and multiple transmit/receive antenna have become two key technologies underpinning most of the current development and research efforts towards ubiquitous high-throughput wireless communications. Both techniques can be used to increase the link throughput and/or to improve its robustness against channel fading and noise. This paper presents a unified bit error rate...

Performance analysis of relay selection in cooperative networks over Rayleigh flat fading channels

Performance analysis of an up-link cooperative diversity system is investigated; sharing of the two ordered best relays over Rayleigh flat fading channel is introduced to establish full diversity order for both users. The two users are competing for the same best relay, so assigning the best relay for one user, and the next-best relay for the other shows different diversity...

A distributed multi-robot adaptive sampling scheme for the estimation of the spatial distribution in widespread fields

Monitoring widespread environmental fields is undoubtedly a practically important area of research with many complex and challenging tasks. It involves the building of models of the fields or natural phenomena to be monitored, the estimation of the spatio-temporal distribution of a variety of environmental parameters of interest, such as moisture or salinity in a crop field, or...

Analysis of superframe adjustment and beacon transmission for IEEE 802.15.4 cluster tree networks

Wireless sensor networks based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard are able to achieve low-power transmissions in the low-rate and short-distance wireless personal area network (PAN). A cluster tree network consists of several clusters; each cluster has a coordinator, known as cluster coordinator, and several device nodes. In the cluster tree topology of IEEE 802.15.4, a PAN...

Content aware optimization for video delivery over WCDMA

A content-aware networking framework for transmitting video on the uplink of a Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) cellular network is studied in this article. We consider a multi-user scenario and exploit the underlying structure of the video content to optimally schedule frames in order to minimize the total distortion of video quality across all users. In particular...

In this article, we investigate a multi-user video streaming system applying unequal error protection (UEP) network coding (NC) for simultaneous real-time exchange of scalable video streams among multiple users. We focus on a simple wireless scenario where users exchange encoded data packets over a common central network node (e.g., a base station or an access point) that aims to...

Systematic raptor codes for safety broadcast in an unsaturated vehicular highway environment

Active safety broadcast is one of the most fundamental services in intelligent transportation systems. The repetition code proposed in wireless access for vehicular environment (WAVE) standard is inefficient in realistic channel conditions and rapidly changing network topologies. In this study, we propose the use of systematic raptor codes as a forward error correction (FEC...

In this article, we study a radio resource reservation scheme for heterogeneous traffic in a cellular network with spectrum leasing, in which one reservation pool is...

Admission control policy for adaptive multirate multiservices in cellular systems

Forced termination of connections during handover and blocked connection initiation are annoying from the perspective of multiservice cellular system users. Previous studies have shown that an admission control policy reduces the dropping probability to a much lower level but at the cost of raising the blocking probability to a higher level. As an alternative for reducing both...
