Current Obesity Reports

This journal aims to offer expert review articles on the most significant recent developments in the interdisciplinary field of obesity research. By providing clear, insightful, balanced contributions, the journal intends to serve all those involved in the treatment and prevention of obesity and the related spectrum of cardiovascular, endocrinological, gynecological, oncological, psychological, respiratory, and rheumatological conditions.

We accomplish this aim by appointing international authorities to serve as Section Editors in key subject areas across the field. Section Editors select topics for which leading experts contribute comprehensive review articles that emphasize new developments and recently published papers of major importance, highlighted by annotated reference lists. An Editorial Board of more than 25 internationally diverse members reviews the annual table of contents, ensures that topics include emerging research, and suggests topics of special importance to their country/region. We also provide commentaries from well-known figures in the field.

Dual and Triple Gut Peptide Agonists on the Horizon for the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity. An Overview of Preclinical and Clinical Data

The development of long-acting incretin receptor agonists represents a significant advance in the fight against the concurrent epidemics of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. The aim of the present review is to examine the cellular processes underlying the actions of these new, highly significant classes of peptide receptor agonists. We further explore the potential...

Poverty and Childhood Obesity: Current Evidence and Methodologies for Future Research

This narrative review summarizes current knowledge on the link between poverty and childhood obesity, and then describes conventional and modern epidemiologic methods for causal inference that may help provide more robust evidence on how poverty reduction can prevent childhood obesity. Household poverty has been consistently associated with increased risk of childhood obesity...

Peer Intervention in Obesity and Physical Activity: Effectiveness and Implementation

This paper reports the effectiveness of peer intervention in physical activity and obesity, with a focus on implementation. Peer intervention is a parallel method to traditional professional clinical processes, often targeting hard to reach populations. It includes peer education, peer counseling and peer support. There were ten reviews on Physical Activity and seven on Obesity...

Advancing Obesity Management: the Very Low-Energy Ketogenic therapy (VLEKT) as an Evolution of the “Traditional” Ketogenic Diet

This narrative review comprehensively analyzes VLEKT as an advanced nutritional strategy for obesity management. The focus is on the beneficial effects on key disease organs, such as adipose tissue and liver, as well as the modulation of intestinal permeability and its fundamental role in influencing the gut microbiota and inflammatory pathways. The impact of VLEKT on obesity...

Physiology of Weight Regain after Weight Loss: Latest Insights

This review summarizes the most recent research on the physiology of weight regain. It describes developments in areas that are currently being addressed and that may indicate promising directions for future research. Weight regain occurs independent of the way prior weight loss is achieved, i.e. by lifestyle, surgery or pharmacotherapy. Recent novel findings regarding weight...

Investigating the Salivary Biomarker Profile in Obesity: A Systematic Review

This systematic review aims to map the existing literature on salivary biomarkers in adults with metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO), identify key biomarkers associated with this high-risk group, and highlight areas requiring further research to advance this emerging field. Obesity is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of body fat and chronic inflammation. However, not...

The Relationship Between Paternal Smoking and Overweight/Obesity with Childhood Overweight/Obesity: A Systematic Review

This review investigates the relationship of paternal smoking and overweight/obesity during pregnancy and up to one-year post-birth with childhood overweight/obesity up to age 12. Both exposures were analysed separately and together, if appropriate. Included studies indicate that paternal overweight/obesity is consistently associated with increased risk of childhood overweight...

Role of Protein Lysine Acetylation in the Pathogenesis and Treatment of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome

This review aimed to highlight the known role of histone deacetylases (HDACs) and lysine acetyltransferases (KATs) in individuals with obesity, better understand the role of HDACs and KATs enzymes in obesity and related metabolic disorders. Numerous cellular activities, including DNA replication, DNA repair, cell cycle regulation, RNA splicing, signal transmission, metabolic...

Weight Management Strategies to Reduce Metabolic Morbidity in Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects 10–15% of women of reproductive age and is associated with a heightened risk of metabolic morbidity, exacerbated by insulin resistance and obesity. Current weight management strategies have limited effectiveness in reducing metabolic morbidity in this subgroup. This review examines the potential of Intensive Weight Management Programmes...

The Interplay of Genetic Predisposition, Circadian Misalignment, and Metabolic Regulation in Obesity

This review explores the complex interplay between genetic predispositions to obesity, circadian rhythms, metabolic regulation, and sleep. It highlights how genetic factors underlying obesity exacerbate metabolic dysfunction through circadian misalignment and examines promising interventions to mitigate these effects. Genome-wide association Studies (GWAS) have identified...

Circadian Disruption and the Risk of Developing Obesity

This review summarizes recent evidence for a role of the clock in adipose tissue physiology and the impact of circadian desynchrony on the development of obesity. Circadian disruptions due to shift work, late time eating and nighttime light exposure are associated with obesity and its metabolic and cardiovascular consequences. Studies in mice harboring tissue-specific gain/loss...

The Impact of Novel Medications for Obesity on Weight Stigma and Societal Attitudes: A Narrative Review

This narrative review examines the potential implications of the expanded use of novel medications for obesity, particularly the GLP-1 receptor agonists, on weight stigma and societal attitudes towards pharmacologically induced weight loss. It analyses how these medications may potentially contribute to both reducing and exacerbating stigma and discusses strategies to reduce...

Time Restricted Eating: A Valuable Alternative to Calorie Restriction for Addressing Obesity?

In this review, we summarize the molecular effects of time-restricted eating (TRE) and its possible role in appetite regulation. We also discuss the potential clinical benefits of TRE in obesity. TRE is an emerging dietary approach consisting in limiting food intake to a specific window of time each day. The rationale behind this strategy is to restore the circadian misalignment...

Is There a Need to Reassess Protein Intake Recommendations Following Metabolic Bariatric Surgery?

Protein intake is recognized as a key nutritional factor crucial for optimizing Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (MBS) outcomes by preventing protein malnutrition, preserving fat-free mass, and inducing satiety. This paper discusses the current evidence regarding protein intake and its impact on clinical outcomes following MBS. There are considerable gaps in the understanding of...

Defining Hyperphagia for Improved Diagnosis and Management of MC4R Pathway–Associated Disease: A Roundtable Summary

Hyperphagia is a condition associated with rare obesity-related diseases, presenting as a pathologic, insatiable hunger accompanied by abnormal food-seeking behaviors. In October 2023, a group of researchers and clinicians with expert knowledge on hyperphagia convened at the annual ObesityWeek meeting to discuss the need for a unified definition of hyperphagia and key items...
