The Vermont Connection is a community that uniquely transcends an individual, cohort, faculty
appointment, or staff tenure. This journal and the Vermont Connection would not be possible
without the ongoing support of too many individuals, offices, alumnx, and more to name here, but
there are some that we would like to highlight for their contributions to the 44th volume of The
Vermont Connection Journal:
The faculty who challenge us, continually remind us that we are scholars, and give us the
space to laugh, cry, and grow together: Drs. Tracy Arámbula Turner, Jason C. Garvey, Melissa
Rocco, Tiffanie Spencer, and Brittany M. Williams.
The countless staff members at The University of Vermont and beyond who directly and
indirectly support the HESA program through their teaching and guidance: C. V. Dolan
(HESA '13), Rev. Laura Engelken (HESA ‘96), Lindsay Furlong-O'Hara, Larry Long, and Joseph
Russell.
The faculty and staff members who coordinate the HESA program and the admissions
process, support graduate assistantships and practicum experiences, encourage us to ask the
hard questions, guide our personal, professional, and academic journeys, and keep the gears
turning behind the scenes: Dr. Tracy Arámbula Turner, Chris Caswell, Dr. Kathleen Manning,
Kunie Renaud, and Dr. Melissa Rocco, and so many more practicum, graduate assistant, and
professional supervisors across campus.
The librarians who answer our continuous emails, manage the publication platforms, and are
willing to stretch the boundaries of academic scholarship with us: Daniel DeSanto and Donna
O'Malley.
For their beautiful reflections, thoughts, and support of the 44th volume of The Vermont
Connection Journal through the foreword and closing reflections: Tatiana Havens (HESA ‘22)
and Joseph Russell.
The alumnx who answered our phone calls, text messages, and emails, volunteered their time
and experiences, and otherwise supported the HESA program and the TVC fundraising

efforts this year; and Kathryn Meader (UVM ‘15) and Kevin Morgenstein Fuerst from the UVM
Foundation for their continued support and encouragement.
For their brilliance, scholarship, vulnerability, patience, stories, and critical eyes: The Authors
and Peer Reviewers who lent their time and expertise to this undertaking.
The baristas that kept us caffeinated, the servers who kept us fed, the custodians who kept
our learning environments clean and safe, and all of the individuals who will never know
their contributions to our journeys but are vital to them, nonetheless.
The long legacy of students, scholars, practitioners, and leaders before us, and those who will
come after us, in building and sustaining The Vermont Connection.
The TVC 44 Executive Board would also like to thank, recognize, and honor Beverly Belisle for
her 20+ years of mentorship, advocacy, and support at The University of Vermont. She has touched
the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff of color; her presence and leadership will be missed
both by HESA and across UVM. Her legacy will live far beyond her departure this June, and we
extend to her all of our appreciation, well-wishes, and love.
So, to our supporters, cheerleaders, mentors, role models, challengers, co-conspirators,
colleagues, and friends near and far: thank you for all that you are and all that you bring to this
world.
